Breast Augmentation Post-Op Recovery Tips

by Julia Gregory

Breast augmentation is one of the most popular plastic surgeries performed, for a number of reasons, and the results can help a women feel more confident in her body, especially if she has had children. While breast implants have their risks, breast augmentation is widely considered safe, and most women have few side effects. If you're getting a breast augmentation, use the following tips to make your surgery recovery go smoothly:

Enlist Help in Advance

The first couple of days after getting breast implants can be rough, so it is in your best interest to ask a friend or family member to be on hand to help you out during your recovery. You will likely feel quite sore, and some people have an adverse reaction to the anesthesia used during surgery, so having someone around to provide child care (if needed), and assist in making meals or running errands will make your recovery much easier.

Keep Up With Prescribed Pain Medication

Recovering from surgery can be uncomfortable, which is why the majority of breast augmentation patients are prescribed pain medication to help them through the first couple of weeks. You should try to take your medication according to the directions; it is easier to keep on top of pain than it is to alleviate it if you skip a dose.

Have Ice Packs on Hand

When you have breast augmentation surgery, it is not uncommon for your chest to feel sore and tender. Ice packs can help immensely, not just to help the soreness, but also to keep the swelling down.

Take Stool Softeners

The narcotic pain medication prescribed after a breast augmentation can affect your digestive system, and constipation is not uncommon when taking these medications. You can prevent major problems by taking an oral stool softener, eating a high fiber diet, and drinking as much water as possible.

Closely Follow Your Doctor's Instructions

While breast augmentation is considered quite safe, it is still a major surgery and there are risks. For the best aesthetic results, and to avoid the possibility of an infection of the surgery site, it is essential that you carefully follow your doctor's orders. Avoid exercise and activity during your recovery, and pay close attention to your incisions to insure that they are healing properly.

Do the Recommended Breast Massage

After breast augmentation surgery, you may be told to do regular breast massages on your new implants. Don't skip these massages; they are important in helping your breast implants settle into their proper place, and they can also help increase blood flow to the area.

About Me

Assisted Living: Dealing With Everyone's Emotions

The decision to move one of my parents into assisted living was one of the most difficult I have ever made. I had extreme feelings of guilt that led to me being at the facility with my parent practically around the clock. It took a few months before I realized that I could not let my own life fall apart from the guilt I was feeling. I also learned that my parent was fine without me constantly hovering around. Since that time, I have had several friends express similar feelings of guilt. I started this blog to help others in the same situation understand not only their feelings about assisted living, but those of their parents.
