Assisted Living: Dealing With Everyone's Emotions

What Assistance Is Normally Included In Nonmedical Senior Care Services?

by Julia Gregory

As people age, it is not uncommon for the activities they perform each day to become more difficult. This may be due to a decrease in physical strength or energy which often occurs once the golden years of life begin. Fortunately, those who need assistance in completing daily tasks can get help from companies that provide senior care services. These are very helpful to those who do not with to leave their homes to live in a senior facility. These are some of the services that are usually offered by these companies.

Homemaking & Companionship

One service that is normally included is housekeeping. This can include assisting the resident with cleaning in the home, doing laundry and preparing meals. The care giver may also spend quality time with those residents who live alone and need companionship.

They may play card games, watch movies or do knitting or sewing with the resident. If the resident likes to do outdoor activities, such as gardening or other hobbies, these are also things a care giver can take part in with the resident.

Transportation

Often these residents may no longer drive or have family members that can help with their transportation. The care giver can also provide this service. They may take residents shopping, to doctor appointments, church or other activities the resident likes to participate in.

Hygiene

If the resident needs assistance with hygiene, this can also be provided by the care giver. This includes bathing, showers, shaving and oral hygiene. If the resident only needs assistance with certain things, such as hair styling, this is also offered by the caregiver. Assistance with toileting and incontinence is all included in these services.

Medications

Some senior residents may need to take certain medications to maintain their best health. However, it is not always easy for seniors to remember to take these medications at the correct times throughout the day. Care givers can come to the home to administer medications to the resident on the proper schedule to ensure they are taken correctly.

With the wide variety of care that is available, senior care services in the home have become more popular over the last decade. This gives residents the ability to remain in their own homes while also receiving the care they need. This also takes much of the stress off family members who may be trying to juggle a busy work schedule with caring for their loved ones. About Me

Assisted Living: Dealing With Everyone's Emotions

The decision to move one of my parents into assisted living was one of the most difficult I have ever made. I had extreme feelings of guilt that led to me being at the facility with my parent practically around the clock. It took a few months before I realized that I could not let my own life fall apart from the guilt I was feeling. I also learned that my parent was fine without me constantly hovering around. Since that time, I have had several friends express similar feelings of guilt. I started this blog to help others in the same situation understand not only their feelings about assisted living, but those of their parents.
