Assisted Living: Dealing With Everyone's Emotions

How Do You Take Your Coffee? Here Are Some Healthy Answers...

by Julia Gregory

Coffee is not always thought of as a very healthy beverage. Everyone knows that diets are generally better off without a daily dose of the caffeine, sugar, and cream in a typical cup of coffee.

However, it's important to note that coffee actually does contain some healthy antioxidants that are known to reduce risks of serious conditions like liver cancer, cirrhosis of the liver, and type 2 diabetes.

You can make your quotidian cup of joe even healthier by adding any of the following:

  • A dash of cinnamon- Cinnamon doesn't just add a tasty touch to a cup of coffee. It also adds some additional health benefits by helping to lower a coffee drinker's blood glucose, triglyceride, and cholesterol levels.
  • Coconut oil- Coconut oil adds some pleasant flavor to a cup of coffee while also benefiting the health of the skin and hair. Coconut oil contains lauric acid and capric acid, which are known for their antioxidant and antimicrobial qualities.
  • Raw egg yolk- While it may seem a bit unusual as a coffee addition, egg yolk can both contribute protein to a coffee emulsion and create a beverage that's smoother and more rich.
  • Nonfat powdered milk- Using nonfat powdered milk instead of cream or whole milk adds the beneficial nutrients of milk without the fat and the tendency to dilute the coffee flavor. Nonfat powdered milk puts in few calories but adds a lot of protein, vitamin A, and calcium.
  • Cocoa- Just like coffee, cocoa contains a lot of great antioxidants, especially antioxidants that are known for lowering one's risk of heart disease. Of course, cocoa also adds great flavor.
  • Agave nectar- Agave nectar is an alternative sweetener that is natural and adds a bit of flavor. It is known for its unique carbohydrate that has a low glycemic index. This means that it doesn't create the "sugar rush" of traditional sweeteners that often leaves coffee drinkers feeling worn out and ready for a nap after the rush has ended.
  • Vanilla- Vanilla is a popular addition to many different sweets and baked goods, but it has never become overly popular as a coffee addition. However, it will add great flavor to coffee while also contributing some anxiety reducing properties that make it a great help when beginning a busy workday.
  • Soy milk- Cut back on the fat and calories in your coffee by substituting soy milk for regular milk. Soy milk contains fewer calories than even skim milk, and it's fat free.

Next time you're at a local coffee bar like Loft 950, consider asking them if they offer any of these healthy coffee additions.

About Me

Assisted Living: Dealing With Everyone's Emotions

The decision to move one of my parents into assisted living was one of the most difficult I have ever made. I had extreme feelings of guilt that led to me being at the facility with my parent practically around the clock. It took a few months before I realized that I could not let my own life fall apart from the guilt I was feeling. I also learned that my parent was fine without me constantly hovering around. Since that time, I have had several friends express similar feelings of guilt. I started this blog to help others in the same situation understand not only their feelings about assisted living, but those of their parents.
