As You Age, Don't Lose Your Independence: Make Some Changes To Your Home

by Julia Gregory

Getting older does not mean you have to lose your independence in your own home. You will, however, need to purchase some items that will make it easier for you to get around your home.

Modified Kitchen Steps

Reaching items on higher and lower shelves becomes harder when you have balance issues. One option you have for getting around this is to buy a modified kitchen step stool that you can move around your kitchen.

A modified version has rails on multiple sides and some models even make it possible for you to adjust the height of the rails. This step stool gives you more control, so you do not lose your balance when climbing up to reach for items. Additionally, if you need to bend over slightly, you can hold onto the rail so you do not fall over.

You can also attach small hooks to rails and hang an extended grabber on them. This way if the item is still out of reach once you are on the step stool, you have the tool in an easy-to-reach spot.

Walk-In Tub

The tub in your bathroom is another area that needs adjustments to make it very safe for you to use. You could install basic shower rails, but for those with difficulties with lifting your legs or balance concerns, then a walk-in tub is a great option. These tubs have a door on one side, which opens outward so you can get in without lifting your legs.

Many of these tubs come with built in seating and extended showerheads, which allow you to wash safely while sitting down. It works well as both a shower and a tub, so it is a good compromise if you do not want to replace your current tub with a shower stall.

One concern that some people have had in the past is that you cannot fill up the tub before climbing in, which means sitting in the tub while it fills. To make the filling process faster, many manufacturers use high-pressure faucets to make the water come out quicker. They also have drains that empty the tub faster as well, because you have to wait for the tub to empty most of the way before getting out.

Multiple Rails

One last adjustment you should at least consider is placing rails in areas where mobility is a concern. For example, you can install rails near your bed, around toilets and any steps on the inside or outside of your home. These simple metal bars will help you keep your balance, especially if you need to bend down to pick something up from the floor.

Making changes around your home can allow you to keep some of your independence. It will take some time and planning, but these items are well worth it, so you can stay safe and more importantly, you get to live in your own home.

About Me

Assisted Living: Dealing With Everyone's Emotions

The decision to move one of my parents into assisted living was one of the most difficult I have ever made. I had extreme feelings of guilt that led to me being at the facility with my parent practically around the clock. It took a few months before I realized that I could not let my own life fall apart from the guilt I was feeling. I also learned that my parent was fine without me constantly hovering around. Since that time, I have had several friends express similar feelings of guilt. I started this blog to help others in the same situation understand not only their feelings about assisted living, but those of their parents.
