Scalp Psoriasis: Dealing With An Itchy, Scaly Scalp

by Julia Gregory

With around 125 million people all over the world dealing with some form of psoriasis, doctors have researched numerous ways to help treat patients who are burdened by this autoimmune disorder. One of the most common types of psoriasis is scalp psoriasis. It is estimated that around half of those with psoriasis will eventually experience a flare up on their scalp. This can be embarrassing and uncomfortable. For those who do experience this on their scalp, there are ways to help treat the problem and bring on some comfort. Here are some tips to help treat psoriasis flare ups on the scalp.

Use All Natural Products

When it comes to cleaning and conditioning your hair, you want to get rid of any chemicals that could irritate the skin. The best way to handle this is to use natural products that don't contain these harmful chemicals. Supermarkets who cater in all natural products should have a large variety of these shampoos and conditioners to choose from. The sooner you get rid of the chemicals in your hair products, the quicker you will feel the difference in your scalp.

Rotate Your Products

Now that you have switched to more natural products, you will see a major difference in the scaling and itchiness you once experienced. The psoriasis has the ability to adapt to these products, so the longer you use them, the easier it will be for your scalp psoriasis to come back. In order to prevent this, you will need to rotate your products. This prohibits the psoriasis from adapting to the hair products you are using.

Bring in a Humidifier

Moisture can help with your psoriasis no matter where it is on your body. By bringing in a humidifier into your home, you can help add moisture to the air. This will help reduce the amount of dryness you experience. You can also double up the moisture by using a moisturizer for sensitive skin. You want to be careful that you do not use one with any added perfumes or dyes that could irritate the skin even more.

Soften and Remove the Scale

When you do develop psoriasis on your scalp, you need to remove the scale so that the medicine can get into the skin and treat it. In order to soften it, you will want to use a scale softener that contains salicylic acid. This will help soften the patches and make it easier to remove. When you go to remove them, you want to do it very gently so you don't cause bigger flare ups to occur.

About Me

Assisted Living: Dealing With Everyone's Emotions

The decision to move one of my parents into assisted living was one of the most difficult I have ever made. I had extreme feelings of guilt that led to me being at the facility with my parent practically around the clock. It took a few months before I realized that I could not let my own life fall apart from the guilt I was feeling. I also learned that my parent was fine without me constantly hovering around. Since that time, I have had several friends express similar feelings of guilt. I started this blog to help others in the same situation understand not only their feelings about assisted living, but those of their parents.
