Get Relief for Tired Eyes with These Simple Strategies

by Julia Gregory

Tired eyes, whether you're sitting in front of the computer, driving at night, or just trying to get through a dull workday, can make you feel miserable. Itchiness, redness, and general fatigue can make you long to close your eyes, even if doing so isn't exactly possible in the situation you're in. Fortunately, you can get quick relief for tired eyes in a variety of ways, even if you don't have eye drops handy. While it's a good idea to visit your eye doctor for an eye exam if you find that tired eyes are a chronic issue, here are some simple strategies that you can use in the meantime.

Wash Your Glasses

If you wear glasses, the condition of the lenses might be contributing to your tired eyes. When glasses aren't cleaned regularly, they can develop small smudges, and pieces of skin and other debris can coat the lenses. The concern with this situation is that your eyes are constantly looking through this debris and occasionally straining to focus on things in the distance instead of on the debris on the lenses less than an inch ahead. You can often find that by using your glasses-cleaning kit and wiping down the lenses, your tired eyes soon become a thing of the past.

Brighten Up the Environment

Looking at one source of light—for example, your television, computer, or smartphone—in an otherwise dark room will cause your eyes to get strained, which can make them feel tired before long. If you find yourself in this situation, the simple solution is to brighten up the room around you. In most cases, you can simply turn on the lights. If you're viewing your smartphone in the bedroom in which your spouse is asleep, though, it's best to go sit in another room to use the device until you're ready to sleep, too.

Change Your Focal Distance

Constantly looking at something that is close to your eyes, especially if it's an electronic device such as a computer screen, can quickly lead to eye fatigue. Because your eyes aren't moving much, the muscles around them can get strained, and this can lead to discomfort. The solution to this situation is to change your focal distance. That is, stop what you're doing and look at something else that is farther away. Focusing on a piece of art across the room for several seconds, for example, can be enough to relieve some of your eye fatigue.

About Me

Assisted Living: Dealing With Everyone's Emotions

The decision to move one of my parents into assisted living was one of the most difficult I have ever made. I had extreme feelings of guilt that led to me being at the facility with my parent practically around the clock. It took a few months before I realized that I could not let my own life fall apart from the guilt I was feeling. I also learned that my parent was fine without me constantly hovering around. Since that time, I have had several friends express similar feelings of guilt. I started this blog to help others in the same situation understand not only their feelings about assisted living, but those of their parents.
