Top 3 Reasons To Skip The Midwife And Get An Obstetrician

by Julia Gregory

Congratulations! You just found out you are expecting. If this is your first, you are probably starting to worry about all of the things that you need to get done. One of the primary choices which will affect your pregnancy and delivery the most is who you will choose as your health care professional. There are many different opinions out there as to where you should turn for help, the most healthy options for your baby as well as yourself, and the cost associated with all things medical. If you choose to forgo the all natural home birth/doula option, you will need to pick an obstetrician or midwife before or around your 12th week. Here are a few reasons why you may want to just stick with an obstetrician.

1. More Schooling, More Knowledge. One of the primary differences between an obstetrician (OB) and a midwife is about 6 years of school. This is due to a midwife getting a Master's in midwifery while a doctor must go through med school and then residency. While there are some incredible midwives out there, the truth is that even the most experienced midwife is simply not trained for all of the things that could happen during delivery. Midwives are wonderful at completely routine pregnancies and deliveries. However, if you have any complications or have had any in the past, you may want to go with an OB.

2. Hospital Privileges. Hospital privileges are given to a doctor or midwife when they have done the proper registration and completed the hours of training at that specific hospital. While it is common for OBs to have hospital privileges at several different hospitals due to OB and gynecologic emergencies, it can sometimes be hard to find midwives with hospital privileges. If you are considering a midwife and already have a chosen delivery hospital, make sure that your midwife has privileges.

3. Emergency Situations. As previously stated, due to a doctor's advanced training, they are prepared to handle whatever emergency situations may arise. For example, should the baby get stuck in the birth canal and need an emergency C-section, the OB can perform the operation. Should a baby get stuck with a midwife, a doctor will have to be ordered, which can delay the time before the baby is out of danger. Additionally, one should be aware that should a midwife have questions they usually turn to the doctor. Some people who have tried to avoid the cost of an OB have been alarmed to be given a bill for both a midwife and OB after delivery, since an OB was actually required. Save yourself the hassle.

About Me

Assisted Living: Dealing With Everyone's Emotions

The decision to move one of my parents into assisted living was one of the most difficult I have ever made. I had extreme feelings of guilt that led to me being at the facility with my parent practically around the clock. It took a few months before I realized that I could not let my own life fall apart from the guilt I was feeling. I also learned that my parent was fine without me constantly hovering around. Since that time, I have had several friends express similar feelings of guilt. I started this blog to help others in the same situation understand not only their feelings about assisted living, but those of their parents.
